Saraswati is the Hindu goddess of universal knowledge, sciences, music and creative arts. As the consort of Lord Brahma, she represents enlightenment, intellect, eternal wisdom and learning. Saraswati epitomizes the creative power of Brahma, the Creator of the universe. She is the ‘Vaghdevi’, the Goddess eloquent speech and sound. She is traditionally draped in a white saree and has a white swan as her vehicle; the white symbolizes the essence of purity or Sattva Guna and the swan stands for spiritual attainment and true liberation. The white swan is also said to be able to separate the milk from a mixture of milk and water and thereby represents the supreme faculty of discrimination between the good and the evil or between the transcendental and the ephemeral.
The four arms of the Goddess Saraswati stand for the four elements of the inner self of the learner – the mind, the intellect, the consciousness, and the ego. With one hand she holds the Vedas or the holy Scriptures (symbolizing true knowledge) and has a lotus – a symbol of light of knowledge and truth – in another. Sometimes she is seated on a lotus and holding a rosary which symbolizes meditation and spirituality in her hand instead. With the remaining two hands, she holds a string instrument called the Veena that symbolizes creative arts and all other knowledge. It also represents supreme knowledge that helps man to attune himself with the Supreme Being and realize the harmony in the universe. Saraswati is associated with the love for the rhythms of music which symbolizes all human emotions and feelings.
